Just a few weeks ago a new club was founded by a few sophomores based on a common outdoor pastime.
Fishing is an activity not everyone is interested in, the founders of the club love it and wanted other Hickman students to feel the same, so they founded the Hickman Fishing Club.
“The idea for [a] fishing club started way back in March when Josh [Ladehoff (10)], Kylan [Craig (10)], and I went fishing out at Rocky Fork Lake…mostly as an excuse for us to go fishing and say it’s for an activity,” Carlton Wexler (10) said.
“[I wanted to] found [the club] because it’s something I enjoy and want to share,” Josh said.

The three boys are the founding members and leadership of the club. Carlton, also a member of Hickman Speech and Debate, is the president; Josh, who plays soccer and runs cross country, is the vice president; and Kylan, a member of the track and cross country teams is the club’s treasurer.
Despite being founded to be able to fish more, the founders of the club still have other goals for the club.
“The main goal of the club is to teach [Hickman] students how to fish responsibly and manage our natural resources and to get bass fishing started in [Columbia because] it’s a MSHAA sanctioned event,” Carlton said.
“I hope to provide a [place] for people to compete. I like fishing because it can be competitive and is skill-based,” Josh said.
While not everyone has the patience for or the desire to fish, these three enjoy the activity and want to help others who like fishing learn more about it.
“[What I like most about] fishing [is] how calm it is…and for me, I’ve always loved the water, so being on the water, especially at sunset is so peaceful and relaxing,” Carlton said.
