Champa Lhunpo
The Tibetan Buddhist Monk, Champa Lhunpo, visits Hickman to give a presentation to deepen student’s knowledge of Buddhist beliefs and practices.
Hickman and Battle students came to the Hickman Little Theatre for a presentation from Champa Lhunpo, a Tibetan Buddhist Monk teaching about Buddhist practices and beliefs. Champa worked as a Monk in a monastery alongside the Dalai Lama for 20 years. After leaving the monastery, Champa moved to the United States in 1992 and has been touring North America since then. Mr. Frisell first saw Champa on the cover of the Kansas City Star constructing a mandala to be displayed in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
Champa has come to Hickman High School every year since 2001. It has become a tradition for both AP World History, Classical Ideas, and World Religions classes to listen to his speech to deepen their knowledge on the Buddhist religion that shaped early Asia. In addition to his speech, Champa brought authentic Tibetan sound bowls and prayer beads that students were able to purchase during 4th block and during his presentation with Amnesty International.
