Valentine’s Day is a day that is often celebrated by exchanging gifts between friends and loved ones but it is still very different for each person and Hickman students have varying opinions on its importance as a holiday. Some students at Hickman don’t believe in celebrating Valentine’s day while other students see it as more than just a day to show affection.
“It’s kind of fake in my opinion because a lot of times people think it means they have to get something for their friend…and there’s no actual thought put into it,” senior Jaelynn Kessinger said.
One thing students said about Valentine’s day was that gifts shouldn’t be bought just because it’s Valentine’s day but people should try to put thought into what they buy instead of just picking up the first thing they see on the shelf.
“I think if the gift is meaningful, then it would make sense to spend money. However, if someone is just buying something to be nice…it shows that you don’t actually care,” sophomore Beatrice Lookingbill said.
A lot of students believe the best way to celebrate Valentine’s day with the one you love is to put thought into the special day to show how much you really care for them. However, not everyone has someone to celebrate Valentine’s day with. Beatrice offers some advice.
“If you don’t have someone to spend time with, be with yourself. Take time to relax and feel better about yourself. Valentine’s day is about love, with others and yourself,” Beatrice said.
For people who don’t have someone to celebrate Valentine’s day with, a good way to celebrate is to focus on yourself and appreciate who you are. Go out and do something that makes you happy and feel good, whether it’s challenging yourself or doing something relaxing.
“If you have someone to spend time with, spend time with them. Whether it’s at the mall or a restaurant or even just at home, spend time with those you love,” Beatrice said.
