Keeping up with the Kewpies: May 2nd-9th

Keeping up with the Kewpies: May 2nd-9th

This week is the last week of the regular season for all of the spring sports at Hickman. Some sports, such as boy’s tennis have already begun their postseason push with their match against Smith-Cotton on Monday, more on that later. I’m Ben Drury and without further ado let me get into the first full edition of Keeping Up with the Kewpies.

Boy’s Baseball

Last week the 11-19 Hickman baseball team, won one and lost one out of the two games they played in the last seven days. Unfortunately for the Kewpies, in their first game against Springfield Catholic last Saturday, they lost in a tough game, 7-16. In their previous game, they played their cross-town rivals, Battle. They were able to pull through in the end and ran away with the game, 7-1. Looking forward, the Kewpies have their last game tomorrow at Fatima. Then, they will move into the postseason, where they will play against Battle once again. The tournament will take place from May 15 to 18, the bracket is to be determined.

Track and Field

This week has been a down week for Hickman track and field as there were no meets scheduled, and every workout or run was honed towards getting ready for Districts at Rock Bridge on Saturday. As I have discussed in prior stories, the Hickman track and field team has the potential to be one of the best Hickman track teams ever. Hickman has potential on both the boy’s and girl’s side; there have been numerous school records that have been held from 5 to 30 years and beyond they have broken this year. Also, as I mentioned, their district meet is on Saturday in rival territory at Rock Bridge. Much like every other sport I mention, I would recommend coming out to watch all the athletes compete in their district tournaments.

Boy’s Tennis

Like I said earlier, the 4-11 Hickman boy’s tennis had their district tournament this week. Unfortunately for the Kewpies, their season came to an end on Tuesday. Before losing to Rock Bridge in the semifinals of the tournament, they were able to beat Smith-Cotton in the quarterfinals at home. In this match, the Kewpies walked away with a 5-0 win, however in the next match, they would fall short, losing 4-5 against Rock Bridge.

Girl’s Soccer

The 13-6 Hickman girl’s soccer team has been on a tear lately. This past week, and earlier, the team has been able to go undefeated in conference play. They have been able to beat every other team in Columbia, and their final regular season game is tonight against Helias. This week in particular, they hold a 3-1 record beating Tolton, Osage, and Afton. They beat all three teams somewhat easily winning 3-0, 4-0, and 1-0 respectively. Their one loss came against Hannibal on Monday, where they lost 2-3 in overtime. As I mentioned previously, the Kewpies face off against Helias tonight in the final CMAC game of the season, and the final game before their district tournament next week, where they will play cross-town rival, Rock Bridge in the first round. This team is fun to watch and I would highly recommend coming out at 6 for the JV game and 8 for the Varsity game.

Kewpie of the week

For this week’s Kewpie of the week I have chosen, Lucy Elfrink (12) who is a member of the girl’s soccer team. In the games I was able to watch this past week, Lucy was excelling, scoring multiple goals in most games. The game I would particularly like to mention is the game against Tolton last Thursday. Lucy was able to score three goals, also known as scoring a hat trick. Through the first half of the game, the Kewpies were at a standstill with the Trailblazers, but that would soon cease, as Lucy would get on a roll and score three goals, to give the Kewpies the win 3-0.
